The Symptoms And Treatment Of Sciatic Pain Nerve
Sciatica is a pain that is caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. The pain in sciatica usually goes from the lower back on the back of the thigh. Sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, it begins from nerve roots in the lumbar spinal cord in the lower back and passes through the gluteal part, releasing the nerve endings down the lower extremity.
Due to the fact that sciatica most often arises owing to intervertebral disk hernia forming, which squeezes nerve, symptoms of sciatica may appear under any hernias formation or inflammation of a nerve. The reasons for sciatica include irritation of the nerve adjacent bone, tumors, muscles, internal bleeding, infection, trauma and so on.
Such syndromes as pain, burning sensation and numbness or tingling dissenting from the lower part of a back, above the buttocks, down the back of the thigh and lower leg could be caused by sciatica. If a strong inflammation occurs, there is a trouble while walking. Sometimes it is impossible to walk. Sometimes the symptoms of sciatica are amplified when walking or when the slopes and end, when a person takes a horizontal position.
Diagnosis is based on the examination and medical history. Typical symptoms and some tricks of the survey help the doctor to diagnose sciatica. Sometimes, in order to further determine the causes of sciatica using of X-rays and other tests such as computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging and electromyography is conducted.
Traditionally, bed rest is prescribed for sciatica treatment. But is it right?
A group of doctors in the Netherlands, led by Dr. Patrick Vrumen has conducted the study of bed rest effectiveness for patients with severe sciatica. 183 patients, randomly selected, have complied with the bed rest according to their doctor’s instructions.
A set of criteria was generated to assess the results. Firstly, the general condition of a patient after 2 and 12 weeks was assessed, according to the doctor’s and patient’s combined opinion. Then changes in disability, pain, need for hospital and surgery were assessed. Neither the doctors who evaluated the results, nor the patients who participated in the study, did not know which treatment the patients were passing through.
The results, which were published in «New England Journal of Medicine», showed that after two weeks had passed, 64 out of 92 (70%) patients who were on bed rest, showed improvement in comparison with 59 out of 91 (65%) patients from the control group. After 12 weeks had passed, 87% of patients in both groups showed the improvement. The evaluation of pain intensity, anxiety symptoms and general condition did not reveal significant differences between the two groups. The need for hospital and surgical intervention were similar in the two groups.
The researchers concluded that “Among patients with symptoms and signs of lumbosacral radicular syndrome, bed rest is no more effective therapy than careful observation”.
Other methods of sciatica treatment are aimed to removal of the root causes. These facilities are pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs, drugs for muscle relaxation and physiotherapy. With sustained sciatica caused by compression of nerves in the lower spine, some may require surgical procedures.
