Gestational Diabetes And Appropriate Diet Plan

Sometimes a woman may become diabetic as a result of being pregnant. This type of diabetes is called gestational diabetes. It is the type of disease considered to be not as serious as other types. A proper diet and insulin injections are usually everything a person needs to recover from gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes also usually disappears right after the baby is born.
But it happens also that a person who is already diabetic becomes pregnant. This condition is different from gestational diabetes and is usually called pre-existing diabetes. No matter what the differences are, a person should still stay on a proper diet to manage the disease. Such women must follow certain pregnancy diabetic diet plans to stay healthy.
The general rule is to increase calorie intake for expectant mothers with diabetes. Patients with pre-existing diabetes should have about three thousand calories starting with the second trimester of their pregnancy. If a diabetic woman consumes twelve hundred calories per day, she should have fifteen hundred during the pregnancy. It is required for the baby to receive all necessary nutrients in the right amount.
Pregnant diabetic women must also get plenty of vitamins and minerals. They are allowed to eat a larger amount of proteins and dairy products. But the amount of fats should remain low. Expectant mothers should have iron and foliate in their daily ration. A good thing is if your obstetrician could give you a pre-natal vitamin. It may compensate all the minerals that baby needs.
All foods are grouped into 6 main categories: milk products, vegetables, fruits, breads, meat, and fats. Pregnant women are advised to have up to four servings of milk products daily. One serving may contain one cup of skimmed milk or 1.5 ounces of low fat cheese.
A pregnant diabetic woman should have as many as fifty six servings of meat, fish or poultry per day. It may seem to be too much, but a single serving here is equal to one ounce of cooked meat, one egg or one tablespoon of peanut batter.
Breads could be consumed in the same amount of servings. And here one serving may contain one slice of whole grain bread, five crackers, a waffle or a biscuit. Three – forth cups of cereals is considered to be one serving. Cereal is recommended for pregnant women as it is a good source of proteins, vitamins, minerals and fiber.
No more than two servings of fruits are allowed under diabetic diet for pregnant women. And two servings of fruit contain one cup of fresh fruit. Lots of vitamins and dietary fiber are found in fruits. Apricots appear to be a good source of vitamin A.
