The Defensive Measures Against Head Lice

The school year is just getting started and it is time to turn our attention back to the dreaded challenge of pediculosis. Yes, your child will be going back into the den ofhead lice. Will your child be one of the unfortunate ones to get “cooties”? I remember when a mother came to my door and informed me that her off-spring, who my daughter had just spent the night with, had pediculosis and had been sent home from school. At least she came and told me. Or the time I checked my son and found that he had head lice. I wanted to know where he had picked up these “friends” so I checked all of his friend’s heads when they came over (much to his embarrassment). I was terrified when one of his friends was so badly infested that his scalp crawled when I checked him. It has nothing to do with personal cleanliness; it has nothing to do with the creatures flying, hopping, or jumping onto your head (they crawl from shaft to shaft), they are just so contagious. Wouldn’t it be great if we could just prevent them? I decided to do a little investigating and came up with some tips for the defensive actions against these irritating little bugs.

1. Go to your child’s grade school and find out what they are planning to do about this prevalent problem. Volunteer. If they have no plans to check heads ask if you can contact a few parents from their approved check list and plan to check all children’s heads as they enter school. You can stop most of the problem before it spreads this way.
2. Never allow your child to just hang his/her coat or jacket on a peg in the school closet. Lice can travel quite well and to prevent them doing so place all backpacks and coats or jackets into plastic sealable bags. You can also go the extra mile by supplying the plastic bags for the whole classroom. Each person needs to label their bag and use only their bag.
3. Teach your child to never, ever share any items that have been in contact with some other person’s head. Items such as scarves, barrettes, and other hair items, wigs, costumes, pillows, bed linens, brushes and combs, towels, etc.
4. You may think that washing your child’s hair everyday would help the problem. NO! In fact, the lice prefer clean hair to lay their eggs on because the eggs attach better to clean hair. Leave your child’s hair on the dirty side or put some hair product in it. It will make it hard for the lice to attach their eggs.
5. If your child has long hair braid it or put it in a bun or pony tail. If their hair is unable to fan out it will be less likely to come in to contact with other people’s hair. Again a good coat of hair product won’t hurt.
6. Check your child’s head weekly. If your child has head lice you will want to be aware of it early. This will cause less aggravation for everyone involved. And, you don’t want your child to spread it to other children or family members.
7. Head lice can make a person’s head itch. If you notice your child scratching his head or has small red bumps on his neck or scalp investigate further to see if you can see the tell tale sign of nits (eggs) attached to their hair.
8. Use tea tree oil shampoo. Parasites hate tea tree oil and are repelled by it. I even use this on my dog and he never has fleas! Try it.
9. You might also buy a spray bottle fill it with water and about 10 drops of tea tree oil. Spray your children’s hair as they are about to leave for school
each morning.

I hope these tips will help you in theprevention
of your child getting these creatures this year. If it happens you can go online and find out what to do about the problem. Follow the instructions to the letter. Never use Lindane or Kwell (commonly prescribed for pediculosis) for getting rid of this problem as some childrens immune systems can not handle these pesticides. There have been reports of it causing cancer and even death. Just be very careful in what you choose to use especially if you are pregnant. And enjoy this school year what ever it brings.
